In the first few months after the infection, it is usually possible to prevent the infection from becoming chronic. Treatment with the drug Interferon lasts for at least six months.
If you have already been infected with HCV for a long time, treatment is more difficult. Another medication is also used which reduces the replication of the virus. The treatment lasts for between six and eighteen months and can have strong side effects. Somewhat more than half of all infections can be cured. Liver-damaging substances such as alcohol, drugs and unnecessary medications should be avoided during hepatitis C illness.
