Amoebae can cause strong stomach pain, fever and bloody, slimy diarrhea. Mostly, however, the infection goes unnoticed. An infection with Giardia lamblia also causes diarrhea and stomach pain, as well as bad smelling wind, vomiting, fever and weight loss. The infection usually passes after two to three weeks of its own accord, but the pathogens can also cause long-term illness.

Threadworms cause severe itching and inflammation in the anal area. Scratching can then lead to bacterial infections. In severe cases, the lower intestine can become inflamed. In women, the infection sometimes spreads to the labia and vagina.
