Transmission

The bacteria that cause vaginosis are found in small quantities in many women. Often, it does not cause problems. Sometimes, however, the number of the bacteria rises, causing vaginosis. Among other things, hormonal fluctuations and stress can lead to the damaging bacteria replicating more rapidly in the vagina.

The bacteria can also be sexually transmitted. The illness is therefore more common in women with multiple or changing sexual partners. Also important to know: men can also become infected with the bacteria that cause vaginosis. The infection usually causes no problems in men. But they can pass it on to their female partners.

The bacteria can also be transmitted in ways other than sex. An infection could also be passed on via shared wash cloths or towels, for example.
